What follows is an excerpt from a presentation by Kwon Dae-hyun, a senior researcher at LSIS Research Institute, given at Soongsil University on Nov. 20, 2015.
The hottest topic about smart factories this year has been a variety of Industrial Ethernet technologies that have been launched in the market.
Industrial Ethernet is a digital network technology that enables integrated control of sensors, measuring devices and control devices that are used in industrial automation processes connected through a single communication network.
Digital in form, Industrial Ethernet can transmit a large volume of signals over a long distance, while maintaining transmission stability.
LS Industrial Systems has its own developed Real-time Automation Protocols for Industrial Ethernet (RAPIEnet) technology. RAPIEnet is a technology used for real-time communication in the area of robot control and manufacturing process automation such as semiconductors and automobiles.
Compatible with existing industrial Ethernet standards, RAPIEnet also guarantees real-time data transmissions at a 1GB per second and repairs communication errors 30 times faster than conventional technology. In May 2008, five RAPIEnet technologies developed by LSIS were approved by the IEC subcommittee on industrial networks (SC 65C).
As a developer of RAPIEnet, I’m glad to see that this technological feat will help Korea gain a foothold in the US$10 billion global market.
